Fu Lei
Fu Lei is a younger Chinese artist working a more fanciful mode than the more politically inspired artists. This is a product of new China where restrictions are fewer and life is easier.
Huang Rui
In the history of the Chinese avant garde, Huang Rui is of immeasurable importance. He was a member of the Xing Xing (The Stars), the first avant garde group of artists in China who, in 1979, hung their works on the railings outside the National Gallery of China, They were to be chased away by the police, but would reappear in the nearby park where an unofficial 40,000 visitors came to see their work. Huang Rui has fought his entire adult life for freedom of artistic expression. He tackles sensitive political issues and thus has to couch his criticism in the language of conceptual art. Every one of his solo exhibitions in China have been closed by the authorities, except his most recent one held in Spring 2006 at Chinese Contemporary's Beijing gallery. Although censored, the exhibition was allowed to take place.
Huang Yan
Huang Yan explores the place of traditional and or communist motifs/icons in contemporary society. His Mao series of porcelains are all unique pieces, each with a different glaze. They are all made in Jingdezhen, the birthplace of porcelain and home to the former imperial porcelain manufacturers.
Shen Fan Shen Fan is one of the few abstract artists in contemporary Chinese art. He works in oil on paper and more recently in oil on linen. As the oil from the paint seeps into the support, three textures are created -- the paint solid, the oil and the paper or linen. The works in this exhibition take traditional Chinese landscapes as their starting point. Shen Fan was selected for the 2006 Shanghai Biennale and created a major installation work of neon and sound also taking its inspiration from traditional Chinese landscape painting.
Xue Song
Xue Song's works are made of collages of torn pieces of paper, some with their edges burnt, others not. In the early 1990s, Xue Song's studio burned down and destroyed all his works. In a cathartic process, he took the ashes of his old works and used them to create new works. He has continued using burnt paper in his work ever since. Xue Song carefully chooses the material of his collages from newspapers, magazines and books, selecting the fragments depending on the subject of his work. "Who Is He?" refers to Lei Feng, a communist hero devoted to the communist state shown at the top of the work, well known to all Chinese except those of the younger generation shown at the bottom of the work.
Wang Jin
Wang Jin's Dream of China series is his way of expressing the flow of tradition through contemporary society. The work is a traditional form taken from Beijing Opera and made with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and fishing line as the embroidery thread. Wang Jin calls PVC, "techno trash," and he feels it is the perfect expression of contemporary society. The traditional form recalls the importance of tradition in contemporary life.
Zhang Dali
Zhang Dali is one of the foremost artists of contemporary Chinese art. He was selected for last year's Kwangju Biennale in Seoul and his work has been included in such important exhibitions as "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China" shown at the International Center for Photography, New York, the Smart Museum, Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and "The Wall" at the Millennium Museum, Beijing and the Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo. The Saatchi Collection has recently acquired works from his “Chinese Offspring” series. His neon works are the transformation of his graffiti into the realm of public advertising.
Zhou Chunya
Zhou Chunya is from Sichuan province in south central China and, therefore, is removed from the politicized nature of the capital, Beijing. Zhou Chunya's art is typical of work from Sichuan in that it addresses personal issues rather than great political ones. For years he has painted his dog, which is always green. Through his portrayal of the dog he has captured the whole range of emotional expression. Recently he has started making sculptures of the dog in steel and industrial paint.
